Confirm how the business is treated for tax purposes
Gather formation documents, ownership details, and any tax-election paperwork. The letters LLC alone do not identify the federal return: treatment depends on the owners and relevant elections. See the IRS LLC guidance below before assuming a filing method.
Build your first-year records folder
- Business start date and a description of what you sell or provide.
- Complete income and spending records for the relevant period.
- Account statements and documentation for equipment, financing, and owner contributions.
- Employee or contractor records, if applicable.
- Tax notices, registrations, prior correspondence, and payment confirmations.
Check Texas requirements separately
Texas franchise-tax obligations are separate from federal income-tax filing. Requirements depend on the entity and current rules; owing no franchise tax does not necessarily eliminate information-reporting obligations. Use the Comptroller’s current instructions. Also ask whether sales-tax or employer obligations apply to your operations.
Create a filing calendar for your actual business
Ask which returns, reports, and payments apply to you and for which periods. Do not copy another owner’s calendar without checking entity type, employees, and registrations. Save confirmation numbers and copies once each required step is completed.
Bring a short questions list
For a new Allen consultant or Dallas service owner, useful questions include: Which expenses need more documentation? Which filings are included in this engagement? What should I track differently next year? SV can discuss the records and tax filing you need and confirm the scope before work starts.
